Skin Cycles - Optimize your skincare routine
It’s been long observed that our body has rhythms and cycles that ebb and flow with the earths seasons and cycles. This finely tuned internal time keeper is know as our circadian rhythm—a 24-hour cycle regulated by a "master clock" in the brain. This rhythm synchronizes various physiological processes to environmental cues such as light and darkness, governing sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, and metabolism.
One often overlooked aspect of circadian regulation is its role in skin function. The skin, our largest organ, exhibits its own peripheral clock that coordinates with the central circadian clock. This skin clock influences vital processes such as cell proliferation, DNA repair, sebum production, and barrier recovery.
Skin cell division tends to peak at night, likely due to reduced exposure to environmental stressors like UV radiation. DNA repair mechanisms and absorption are also heightened during nighttime hours, peeking at 4am. This is also when the skin replenishes its natural oils, sebum. This should highlight the importance of sleep for skin health.
Timing is everything, and knowing all this I had to question not only what I was putting on my skin but when, including when I showered. I revamped my whole routine. Personally I shower in the morning. I love being awoken by the water. It brings my brain online, makes me feel alive, but now I know that my skin has worked all night to repair and replenish itself I am more conscious of how, what, and when I use to clean my skin. This is a whole other topic.
During the day, the skin's defense mechanisms—including antioxidant activity and immune responses—are up-regulated to protect against external aggressors, from sun damage to environmental toxins. The skin is the least absorbent at 4 pm, which makes sense, that is when the sun is the most intense, it's the skins way of protecting itself from over exposure.
Disruptions in circadian rhythms—caused by irregular sleep, shift work, or excessive screen time—can impair the synchronization between the central and peripheral clocks. This misalignment may contribute to premature aging, increased susceptibility to skin disorders such as eczema or psoriasis, and diminished wound healing.
Here is a spoiler alert, Midnight snaking interrupts your skin’s ability to cleans and reset itself. If you are concerned about sustaining your youthful glow make sure you are respecting your skin and sleep cycles.
